![]() The issue was hardly less controversial in the 90s than it had been in the 40s. Plans to reintroduce wolves to the national park were hatched in the 40s but it wasn’t until 1995 that a group of Canadian wolves were released in Yellowstone. One of the world’s first national parks, Yellowstone was supposed to be a wilderness for all, but without wolves – the park’s apex predator – the elk population skyrocketed and the natural ecosystem began to deteriorate. ![]() This absence of wolves was felt keenly in Yellowstone National Park, in the American West. By the end of the 19th century, wolves had been hunted, trapped and poisoned into extinction in most of the lower 48 states. When the Mayflower pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620, there were two million wolves on the North American continent. ![]()
